Studying in Italy: A Guide to Visa Deadlines for the 2026-2028 Period

Do you dream of attending a University or a SSML in Italy? Turning this dream into reality involves some key bureaucratic steps. If you are an international student, here is the updated roadmap and key points to ensure you are well-prepared.

Mark your calendar: the deadlines

First of all, keep an eye on the clock! Submitting your application on time is the first step to avoiding unpleasant surprises.

Academic YearVisa Application Deadline
2026 / 2027by November 30, 2026
2027 / 2028by October 31, 2027

Please Note:
These deadlines apply to standard degree programs, including Bachelor’s degrees (Laurea), Master’s degrees (Laurea Magistrale), and first- and second-level academic diplomas (including single-cycle degrees).

Who decides what? A three-way process

It is easy to get confused between universities and consulates. Here is how the responsibilities are divided:

  1. The Institution (University/Academy/SSML): Evaluates your previous academic qualifications and decides if you are eligible for the course. Their word is final regarding academic admission.
  2. The Diplomatic Representation (Consulate/Embassy): Has the final say on visa issuance. Even if the university has admitted you, the consulate must verify security and immigration requirements.
  3. The Ministry of the Interior: Handles the next phase: issuing and renewing the residence permit (permesso di soggiorno) once you arrive in Italy.

The “Migration Risk” Factor

Obtaining pre-enrollment does not automatically guarantee a visa. Consular authorities must assess the absence of migration risk. What does this mean? Simply put, they must ensure that your primary goal is truly to study.

Consuls will look closely at:

  • Your socio-economic status (and that of your family).
  • The coherence of your path: do your past studies align with the course you have chosen in Italy?
  • The quality of your previous academic career.

A single point of access: Universitaly

Do not trust unofficial portals or suspicious intermediaries. There is only one free and mandatory point of reference for pre-enrollment:

UNIVERSITALY

The entire visa application procedure must pass through here. It is the official channel of the Ministry of University and Research and is the only way to correctly start your application.

In summary: three tips to get it right

  • Act in advance: Do not wait until the last day of the deadline; processing times at consulates can be long.
  • Flawless documentation: Ensure your academic qualifications are complete and ready for university evaluation.
  • Coherence: Be prepared to demonstrate why your chosen course in Italy is the natural continuation of your professional or academic growth.
